York hotels with parking

Founded in 71 AD as a military fortress near the junction of the Foss and Ouse, York has certainly come a long way. These days, it’s famous for its mediaeval architecture, a truly impressive set of city walls, and its magnificent Victorian railway station. Each year, York welcomes around 8.5 million visitors who come to experience more than 2000 years of English history in a city that has witnessed the rise and fall of empires.

York is an exceptionally popular destination for history buffs. There are numerous walking tours on offer that will take you to all of the historical highlights, such as the Roman city walls; York Minster, one of the largest gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe; Clifford’s Tower, an iconic symbol of York’s mediaeval past; The Shambles, the best-preserved mediaeval street in the UK with its ancient cobblestones and timber framed buildings; and York Castle Museum where you can learn all there is to know about mediaeval crime and punishment. All this doesn’t mean that York is stuck in the past, though. It has a lively and vibrant arts and culture scene that attracts art enthusiasts, theatre lovers, and music aficionados from around the globe. Museums, galleries, and theatres like the Theatre Royal, host everything from classic plays and exhibitions to contemporary productions. The annual York Festival of Ideas celebrates art, culture, and intellectual exploration and also contributes to the city’s cultural scene. York manages to combine all this history and culture with a distinct love of food and drink, with an abundance of lively eateries and traditional pubs serving up hearty British cuisine. If you’re heading there for the food, definitely hit up the Shambles Market for the biggest range and the best artisanal options. Like many other older towns and cities in the UK, the narrow, winding streets make for great walking but aren’t that friendly towards drivers. Parking can be difficult to find or eye-wateringly expensive, assuming you manage to find it in the first place. This guide aims to help you find well-liked hotels and other accommodation providers in York that either offer free or deeply-discounted parking on-site or nearby.
