Free & Paid Parking in Harrogate

Harrogate is a spa town in North Yorkshire. The spa water – which contains iron, sulphur, and salt – was discovered in the 16th century and was known as ‘The English Spa’ in the Georgian era. The town grew from two smaller settlements merging.

Because of the spa history, lots of 19th century architecture still remains including the Royal Bath Hospital, Royal Pump Room, St Wilfrid’s (which is Grade I listed), and the Royal Hall Theatre (Grade II listed and the only surviving Kursaal in Britain).

Harrogate was home of engineer and inventor Samson Fox who perfected the creation of water gas. He trialled it on his own home, making it the first house in Yorkshire to have gas lighting and heating. This was eventually expanded to supply all of the town, and Fox was said to have ‘captured the sunlight for Harrogate’.

Nowadays, the focus of Harrogate’s business is in conference and exhibition industries – the Harrogate International Centre draws the bulk of visitors to town. There are many shops, restaurants, and hotel to cater for visitors – the Montpellier quarter is big for both shopping and nightlife.

The Great Yorkshire showground is centre of Harrogate’s agricultural industry. Events include the Great Yorkshire Show, Countryside Live, and Harrogate Flower Show.

Attractions of Harrogate include the spa, many parks like Harlow Carr Gardens and The Stray, and the town is only 13 miles away from the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It’s also the home of Yorkshire Tea and Harrogate Spring Water.

The population of Harrogate is over 75,000, which is bolstered by 350,000 annual visitors. This can make it quite difficult to find parking, especially for free or cheap. On this page, we have gathered all of the free options in Harrogate to make your trip easier.
